Overview

Dan Meehan is a tax partner focused on private investment funds and their sponsors. For almost 25 years, Dan has maintained one of the most active fund-related tax practices in the world. During the 2-year period ending August 31, 2018, Dan advised on the tax aspects of over 300 fund formation projects. Almost 100 of those held one or more closings during that period, raising a combined total of over $100 billion in capital commitments. 

Dan’s clients include sponsors of private equity funds, credit funds, growth equity funds, venture capital funds and hedge funds located across the U.S., Europe and Asia. He assists with fund formations ranging in size from under $100 million to over $10 billion.  

Dan also advises on the tax aspects of fund restructurings and recapitalizations, fund secondary transactions, and minority investments in fund sponsor groups. He has structured and guided clients through the tax aspects of over 30 such transactions during the past five years.

Clients appreciate Dan’s ability to make complex tax issues understandable. With a practice that annually covers 200 separate fund sponsors, Dan has a unique and comprehensive perspective on the private fund industry. This allows him to provide practical and creative tax solutions that work for both fund sponsors and their investors.

He is the principal author of "Midstream Shareholder Liquidity Alternatives: Structuring Shareholder Take-Outs in Growth Equity Financings," Venture Capital Review (2012); a contributor to Mergers, Acquisitions & Buyouts, by Levin & Rocap; a co-author of "Negotiating Merger & Acquisition Agreements," NYU 61st Institute on Taxation (Oct. 2002); a co-author of "Multi-Step Acquisitions: New Solutions to Corporate and Securities Law Problems in Tax-Free Reorganizations," The Corporate Governance Advisor (March 2002); and he has also written for the Journal of Partnership Taxation, The Tax Lawyer, and other tax-related publications.
